Sabato: Fifth District Congressman Robert Hurt to retire

Chris Graham

Robert_HurtUVA politics professor Larry Sabato tweeted Tuesday that Fifth District Republican Congressman Robert Hurt will be retiring from Congress.

According to Sabato, Hurt will announce his retirement on Wednesday.

Hurt, 46, was elected to the seat in 2010, unseating Democrat Tom Perriello. A former Perriello aide, Ericke Cage, is expected to make a run for the 2016 Democratic Party nomination in the Fifth. Jane Dittmar, a member of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, has already announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination.

According to Sabato, possible Republican candidates in the Fifth include Charlie Hurt, Robert’s brother, and State Sen. Bill Stanley.
