The Route 921 (Lairs Run Road) bridge over the North Fork Shenandoah River in Rockingham County is scheduled to be replaced beginning Monday, March 18. Route 921 is a dead-end road just off Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road) in the Fulks Run area. It will remain open throughout construction, with occasional flagger traffic control during daylight hours.
The existing Route 921 bridge is a single-lane, low-water structure that was built in 1974. The new bridge will be of similar size but will be capable of accommodating modern traffic loads. The new bridge and its roadway approaches will be about 50 feet north of the current bridge, which minimizes traffic impact during construction.
On January 23, 2019, the Virginia Department of Transportation awarded a $1,593,020.40 contract to Kanawha Stone Company Inc. of Nitro, W.Va. The project has a contract completion date of September 18, 2020. All work is weather permitting.
