Republican turnover in Virginia General Assembly

Chris Graham

saxman-headerInteresting perspective from former Republican Del. Chris Saxman, now the executive direction of the Virginia Foundation for Research and Economic Education, on news on two recent retirements from the Virginia General Assembly.

Northern Virginia Republican Del. Tom Rust’s seat should be considered Likely Democratic Takeover, Saxman wrote in an email today. Rust has represented the 86th District since 2002, and is the current chairman of the House Transportation Committee.

The seat of Virginia Beach Republican Sen. Jeff McWaters is a Lean Republican, according to Saxman, with Republican Del. Bill DeSteph already having lined up his candidacy for the seat.

Saxman notes in his email that there is speculation that McWaters will seek statewide office in the future.

The retirements are more turnover for the Virginia General Assembly, which since 2008 has elected 63 new members to the 100-seat House of Delegates and 21 new members to the 40-seat Senate of Virginia.
