Reports: UVA basketball’s Justin Anderson to declare for NBA Draft

justin dunkSeveral media outlets are reporting that UVA junior Justin Anderson has told coach Tony Bennett that he will declare for the 2015 NBA Draft.

Anderson, a 6’6” guard, was the second-leading scorer for the Cavs in 2014-2015, averaging 12.2 points per game, and he led the ACC in three-point field-goal percentage shooting at a 45.2 percent clip.

Anderson had been considered an All-America candidate before breaking the pinky finger on his left (shooting) hand in Virginia’s Feb. 7 win over Louisville. He missed the next eight games recovering from that injury and an emergency appendectomy before returning for the postseason, which saw the ‘Hoos, who finished the regular season at 28-2, limp home with losses in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament and the third round of the NCAA Tournament, with Anderson scored 23 points in 77 minutes of playing time in the final four games of the 2014-2015 season, shooting 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from the field and 1-of-9 (11.1 percent) from three-point range, continuing a slide that had begun before his injury.

Anderson had gone 17-of-52 (32.7 percent) from the field and 7-of-25 (28 percent) from three-point range in the six games prior to the injury.

For his UVA career, Anderson played in 98 games, with 45 starts, and averaged 8.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from three-point range.

He was a second-team All-ACC selection in 2014-2015 and was the 2013-2014 ACC Sixth Man of the Year.

Several scouting services have Anderson listed as a late first-round selection in the upcoming draft, though there are some that have him falling into the early part of the second round.
