lynchburg hillcatsTwo rain delays that combined for 2:15 of interruption before the Lynchburg Hillcats eventually fell, 15-8, to the Carolina Mudcats Wednesday night (and into Thursday morning) at City Stadium.  Blaine Sims struck out the side in the first but the converted knuckle-baller fought the falling rain and Mudcats bats in the second, failing to record an out.  Emerson Landoni had three hits on the night and drove home a pair of runs for Lynchburg.

Sims (0-6) walked six of the ten men he faced in the second inning, leaving with the bases loaded.  Sims was charged with all eight runs as Brandon Cunniff came on to finish the inning, allowing one of his three inherited runners to score on a wild pitch.

Cunniff would pitch a one-run third inning before play was halted for what turned out to be a 1:50 delay with the Hillcats trailing 9-1.  Lynchburg got their run on an RBI-groundout by Matt Weaver to score David Rohm in the second.

Matt Chaffee took over on the mound after the delay and gave up a two-run home run in the fourth before allowing three RBI-doubles by Carolina in the fifth to make it 14-1 Carolina.

Lynchburg got four runs back in the home half of the inning.  Trent Moses drove in a pair of runs with a double, Rohm delivered a sacrifice fly and Will Skinner singled in a run.  All the runs came off Josh Martin (1-0), who took over on the mound for Carolina after the delay.

Skinner walked with the bases loaded in the seventh to drive in his second run of the game. Landoni singled home a pair of runs to cap a three-run frame that got the Hillcats within six.

Utility infielder Matt Weaver came on to pitch the top of the ninth.  He picked up a strikeout but gave up a run on an RBI-single by Alex Lavisky, who had four RBI in the game.  Weaver also walked three batters to give the Hillcats pitching staff 15 free passes issued in the game.
