Quakers use big second period to turn back Bridgewater

Guilford College used a 33-point, second-period outburst Saturday afternoon to open up a 12-point halftime lead and the undefeated Quakers led the rest of the way in an 84-66 victory over Bridgewater in ODAC women’s basketball action.

Guilford scored the game’s first five points and led 10-5 before a 6-0 spurt put the Eagles ahead. Jessica Lamand Jessalyn Monday converted back-to-back three-point plays for an 11-10 Bridgewater lead with 2:53 left in the opening period.

The Quakers ran off five straight points to lead by four, but the Eagles closed the period with a 5-0 spurt to lead by a point. Lam hit a couple jumpers to tie the score and Monday made 1-of-2 free throws for a 16-15 Bridgewater advantage after one period of play.

Monday opened the second period with a pair of foul shots to put the Eagles up 18-15 before Guilford put together a 9-0 run to take the lead, 24-18.

Guilford led 32-26 when Bridgewater used a 9-0 spurt to regain the lead, 35-32. Rebecca Harvey hit a short jumper and Lam added a three-point play to pull the Eagles to within one 32-31. Two free throws by Mondaygave Bridgewater the lead and two more free throws from Harvey put the Eagles on top 35-32 with 3:29 left in the half.

The Quakers then closed the half with a 16-0 barrage to take a 48-35 lead at the break.

Guilford led by as many as 20 points in the third period, but the Eagles battled back to trail by 12 points, 65-53, heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Bridgewater was unable to make a run in the final period as Guilford improved to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in the ODAC with the final 84-66 victory.

Lam led the Eagles with 25 points and Monday posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Off the bench, the Eagles received nine points from Harvey and 11 rebounds from Kaitlyn Lehan.

Four Guilford starters reached double figures, led by Anais Weatherly with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The Quakers standout just missed a triple-double as she finished with nine steals.

Bridgewater, now 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the ODAC returns to action Monday evening when the Eagles host Ferrum College in a none-conference contest.
