Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer talks with the news media on Monday. Virginia Tech (4-2, 2-0 ACC) takes on Wake Forest (2-4, 1-2 ACC) on Saturday in Blacksburg.

Opening Statement

After we watched the video, I thought it was a good win Saturday, I think Central Michigan is a good football team, and I believe with sincerity that they play good defense, they can really throw the football, and you know it was a good win, we need to learn from it and continue to improve as a football team. I think the real issue now it to continue to get better. This week you’ve got Wake Forest and you have a team that’s had some tough losses. You look at down at Florida State I believe with seven minutes to go it was 17-0 it was a much tighter game than what you might think and a team that we have great respect for and understand they’re going to play hard and be well coached, and I think they’ve probably got their quarterback situation squared away. I know that was an issue for them, but the Price kid did a nice job this past weekend so we’re going to have to make another great preparation.

About the offense, would you prefer that you have methodical 10-play drives or are you fine with a quick strike offense that can explode at any minute?

“No I think you know we’re striving to become more consistent and have more positive plays and those big plays will pop in there. I know our offensive team and coaches met together this morning and looked at eight third down situations that we didn’t convert, and we watched it yesterday as a staff, you know one of them I think it was good defense but the other seven it was about not executing, dropping a ball or pass protection or not a great throw or a penalty, that was us not the other team, and we have to get us in a more consistent way. Every week we stress third downs, we have a third down session every Wednesday to go against our defense, and we’ll continue to do that but there’s no question we want to be a more consistent every play offense and hopefully the big plays will keep popping in there.”

On Greg Nosal’s finger injury and how tough he is

“Yea I think they fixed him up there on Sunday but you talk about a tough guy that wants to play, I think that gives you an idea of the “want to” in the offensive line and they keep working hard and will continue to get better. For him to continue to play it says a lot about him and what his effort for this football team is.”

How much of a surprise was it for your trouble converting third downs?

“Well you know its something that certainly we feel like we’re better than that. The players will tell you seven out of the eight if we execute, we get a first down. It’s just a matter of being consistent and mentally being into it and physically being into it and I think that we’re going to concentrate on getting that done.”

Is Ryan Williams closer to being available?

“Yea I think he is closer but again we’ll see what happens this week and make the announcement on Thursday. I think he feels like he’s improving, and like we said we just want him to be perfectly healthy you know for his benefit and for our sake too, but he needs to be perfectly healthy.”

Because it’s a hamstring injury, is it kind of surprising it has taken this long to heal?

“You know I think with anybody, those hamstrings sometimes they clear up right away and sometimes they take awhile, and I don’t think there’s a definite answer on those things. And for a running back that’s cutting like he is, and changing directions and so forth that hamstring has got to be well.”
