potomac nationalsDH Mike McQuillan hit a solo home run and won the game with a ninth inning RBI-single as the Potomac Nationals (57-46, 19-15) defeated the Carolina Mudcats (48-55, 19-17) 3-2 on Saturday night at Pfitzner Stadium.

McQuillan’s home run to right-center field came off Mudcats’ starter RHP Michael Peoples who allowed two runs over his 5.2 innings. P-Nats starter RHP Ian Dickson went 5.2 innings as well allowing a run with four strikeouts. Dickson allowed eight hits to Peoples’ four, but both were effective in their outings.

SS Yhoxian Medina tied the game at one with an RBI-single that scored RF Logan Vick. Potomac retook the lead in the sixth however when SS Stephen Perez walked with the bases loaded. The Nationals could not muster up anymore insurance however.

With the score 2-1 in the ninth, RHP Pedro Encarnacion (W, 2-3) came within a strike of ending the game. Carolina fought hard though, loading the bases with 3B Yandy Diaz at the plate. Diaz ripped a single into right field scoring 2B James Roberts to tie the game. Encarnacion went the remaining 3.1 in relief of Dickson. He fanned three and walked two.

In the bottom of the ninth, Perez led things off with a walk against RHP Josh Martin (L, 4-5). LF Randolph Oduber laid down the sacrifice bunt to put Perez in position to score, and McQuillan took care of the rest.

The Potomac Nationals Baseball Network, which is accessible at www.potomacnationals.com, will broadcast the final game of a three game series against Carolina on Sunday, July 27th. Broadcast coverage will begin with the P-Nats Leadoff Show at 5:50pm in preparation for the 6:05pm start. The P-Nats will send RHP Hector Silvestre (0-0, 0.00) to the mound while the Mudcats will toss RHP Dylan Baker (1-1, 4.66).
