Poll: Santorum headed toward big win in Louisiana

AFP

Rick Santorum appears to be headed toward building on recent victories in the Deep South with another strong showing in the Louisiana Republican presidential primary.

Public Policy Polling has Santorum at 42 percent in Louisiana, with national frontrunner Mitt Romney at 28 percent, Newt Gingrich at 18 percent and Ron Paul in fourth at 8 percent.

The surprise in the numbers is the rise of Santorum and the fall of Gingrich. The two nearly split the votes of conservative voters in primaries last week in Alabama and Mississippi, but conservative voters in Louisiana, at least, seem to be flocking from Gingrich to Santorum.

The numbers also reinforce Romney’s relative weakness in the Deep South, though that should not be problematic should he get the nomination looking forward toward the general election, where Republicans would be expected to win and win big.
