Salem starter Henry Owens was at his worst, on a night when his counterpart had a career outing, as the Carolina Mudcats bested the Salem Red Sox 9-0. Owens lasted a season-low two innings for Salem, allowing five runs on six hits and five walks. He did strike out three. He picked up the loss for the second straight start (both against Carolina), falling to 6-5.
Mudcats hurler Nick Pasquale pitched a personal-best seven innings, and picked up the win to improve to 1-5, allowing just four hits and one walk in seven frames. Five of Salem’s nine starting position players failed to reach base, and only Henry Ramos, Stefan Welch, and Blake Swihart (two) collected hits for the Red Sox.
In the first, Owens walked two and allowed a single, but got out of a bases loaded jam. He didn’t enjoy similar good fortune in subsequent innings, allowing two runs in the second and three in the third, while failing to record an out before being pulled in the third.
Salem pitching did get progressively better as the night wore on. Heri Quevedo allowed four earned runs in three innings, before Manny Rivera pitched three no-hit innings in his first appearance back with the Sox after a stint in Greenville.
Salem and Carolina square off in game three of their four-game set tomorrow night at 7:15, with Mickey Pena on the mound for Salem against Cody Anderson for Carolina.
