Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson made his 2025 season debut on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk, going 1-for-3 in a 9-2 Tides’ season-opening loss to Durham in front of 10,148 fans at Harbor Park.
Henderson, the 2023 AL Rookie of the Year, laced a single in the fourth inning with a 105.9 MPH exit velocity. He exited the game in the eighth inning after Nick Gordon substituted for him at shortstop.
Henderson saw limited action – three games, six plate appearances – in spring training with the O’s as he dealt with a strained right intercostal muscle.
The big-league team put Henderson, the 2022 International League Prospect of the Year after hitting .288/.390/.504 with 11 homers and 41 RBIs in 65 games with the Tides, on the 10-day IL retroactive to Monday, meaning he is eligible to be recalled to the bigs on April 3.
Henderson is coming off a 9.1 WAR year in 2024, in which he hit .281/.364/.529 with 37 homers, 92 RBIs and 21 stolen bases.
