Optimize the end results by selecting the best test leads

AFP

small businessIt is often seen that the electricians pay attention to several factors and read multimeter reviews while purchasing the multimeter but they often neglect the accessories that play an important role in optimizing the end results. It is due to this reason that readings obtained are not up to the mark. The users of multimeter need to know that the test leads bear high currents when testing. So, it is essential that they should be selected with care to ensure the safety. If you have a digital miltimeter, below listed are some tips that will help you in buying the finest test leads.

  • Material – the leads should be made from high quality materials as the ones with low quality can affect the reading. The ones made up of dissimilar materials will produce errors which cannot be traced. It is due to the reason that when dissimilar metals contact, they act as thermocouple producing their own voltage affecting your reading. The test leads should be purchased based on the environment in which they are to be used. For insulation test lead, silicone or PVC is the best material. PVC is the best material for working in a lab or mild environment whereas silicone is the right choice for working in cold weather as it retains its flexibility.
  • Inspecting and Testing the leads – it is essential to inspect the lead physically before actually using it for measurement. You can look at the insulation, lead connectors and probe handles. Make sure that the insulation should not be cracked as they are prone to cracking with time. After conducting the inspection, do a test to confirm they have the capability to measure the signal in the permission loss range. In order to find out the problematic probe, you can test each one separately.
  • Safety – you need to ensure your safety before starting the measurement task. Make sure that the DMM and test leads both are category rated as well as are set to the right voltage level needed for the job. The several categories are CAT-IV, CAT-III, CAT-II and CAT-I. Other essentials that should be considered are exposed tip of probe, transient test, marking, impact and di-electric with-stand voltage. Some safety tips comprise of:
  1. Always consider working on the de-energized circuits.
  2. Protective gear should be used when dealing with live circuits.
  3. Safety gears like insulated gloves, fire resistant clothing etc, should be worn during the work.
  4. When taking the measurement on the live circuit, ground clip should be hooked first and then touch the hot lead. When removing, the hot lead should be removed first and then the ground lead should be removed.

Additional accessories

Other important accessories that are a must-have comprised of magnetic hangers, probes, current clamps, carrying cases etc. The clamps should be of high quality and offer a good grip so that it can hold the conductor allowing it to take the measurement without actually touching it.

The performance of the multimeter greatly depends on the test leads. So, invest a few minutes to check the quality and also make sure that they meet the safety standards to get the best performance.
