One dead in car accident in Spotsylvania County: State police

policeVirginia State Police Trooper D.J. Jablonski is investigating a fatal crash in Spotsylvania County. The crash occurred Sunday at 12:16 p.m. on Route 1 (Jeff Davis Highway) at Arcadia Road.

A 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was traveling on Arcadia when it made a left turn onto Rt. 1 and pulled into the path of an oncoming 2012 Ford Super Duty truck. The Ford was unable to brake in time and struck the Chevrolet in the side.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Sharon Powell, 71, of Woodford, Va., was transported to Mary Washington Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Powell was wearing her seat-belt.

A passenger in the Chevrolet, Fletcher Powell Jr., 76, was also transported to Mary Washington Hospital with serious injuries. Powell was not wearing his seat-belt.

The driver of the Ford remained on scene and was not injured in the crash.

No charges have been placed.

The crash remains under investigation.
