Northam petitions McDonnell to reject hybrid fee

AFP

ralph northamState Sen. Ralph Northam (D-Norfolk) on Wednesday began circulating a petition that calls on Gov. Bob McDonnell to remove the hybrid fee and to implement a transportation plan that encourages economic growth and embraces a clean energy future.

Sen. Northam’s campaign for lieutenant governor will ask volunteers to circulate petitions across the Commonwealth.  Only Gov. McDonnell can remove the hybrid fee during the veto session on April 3 in Richmond.

You can see the online petition here.

“Virginia has waited almost 30 years for a desperately needed transportation plan and now we must adopt a plan that looks toward a clean energy future. I am calling on Gov. McDonnell to remove the punitive yearly fee on alternative fuel vehicles because it sends the complete wrong message to Virginians and the rest of the nation. We should be encouraging efforts made by citizens to protect our environment as well as lessen our dependence on foreign oil, not charging them a yearly fee for doing the right thing. If the governor chooses to leave this backward-looking fee in place I will make its elimination one of my top priorities as Virginia’s next Lieutenant Governor,“ said Northam.
