Nine Fishburne Military School basketball players headed to D1

Ed Huckaby circles the date on his calendar each year. National Signing Day is a big deal for prospective college student-athletes, and the crowded table in the foyer at Fishburne Military School on Wednesday meant it was a big deal for nine young men who will continue their basketball careers with Division I schools.

“It’s a happy day for the families. A lot of guys are settled on their collage careers now, furthering their education, and they can relax and concentrate on having a good school year. It’s going to be over before they know it,” said Huckaby, the founding coach of the four-year postgraduate basketball program at Fishburne.

This year’s group of Caisson signees includes one who signed Wednesday with a national program (Kuran Iverson, a 6’10” small forward, who signed with Memphis) and three future CAA players (William and Mary’s Daniel Dixon, Towson’s Walter Foster and Delaware’s Barnett Harris).

For Huckaby, whose team is ranked #3 in the Mason-Dixon Combine Top 10 national poll of PG teams and #5 in the Recruit Dirt Top 20 poll including all prep basketball programs, what happens on National Signing Day is as important, or maybe even more so, than what happens on the court.

“How many players are signing early and how many players overall will be going to college, that’s the measurement of the program. You can’t just measure the program by wins. If you’re doing that, you don’t have a program, you just have a team,” Huckaby said.

Russini-gate: Are we making too much of how journalism is done?

I think we’re reading too much into the Dianna Russini kerfuffle that led to the longtime ESPN and The Athletic star journo’s abrupt resignation on Tuesday. Like it or not, this is the way journalism is done. And let me clarify: I don’t mean, it’s done via whatever element of inappropriate romance might be involved...
