Enhanced by three new faces in the starting lineup, the Salem Red Sox utilized 11 base hits and 10 walks from Frederick pitchers to pound the Keys 11-1 on Friday night at LewisGale Field.
Frederick starter Chris Lee had faced the minimum through 10 batters to start his outing, but lost control of his start when Forrestt Allday reached on an error with one down in the fourth. Back-to-back singles loaded the bases before Lee bounced back with a strikeout. However, Mauricio Dubon picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk and Jordan Procyshen flared a two-run single to center to push the Sox ahead 3-0.
After Frederick got a run back in the top of the fifth, the Salem offense got right back to work, loading the bases on three singles with nobody out in the bottom of the frame. Facing a new pitcher after Lee was pulled, Wendell Rijo blasted a two-run double off the left field wall to extend the advantage to 5-1. The Sox would add on two more runs in the frame on two wild pitches from Dylan Rheault and led 7-1.
The onslaught continued in the sixth inning when Salem pushed across three more tallies. After loading the bases with one out on three walks, Kevin Heller doubled down the left field line to push the lead to 9-1. Dubon follow with an RBI single to account for the 10th run. The Sox scored their final run on another wild pitch in the seventh.
The support was more than enough for Ty Buttrey. The righthander picked up his fifth quality start of the year, lasting six innings. Buttrey (6-1) gave up a run on four hits while striking out five and walking one. Kyle Kaminska and Mike Adams combined for three scoreless innings of relief.
Lee (2-3) was lifted without recording an out in the fifth, giving up six runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks in four-plus innings. The Frederick bullpen allowed five runs on five hits and seven walks in four innings of relief.
The Salem offense was buoyed by three newcomers: Dubon, Procyshen and Derek Miller. Dubon was 1-for-4 in his Sox debut, driving in a pair while Procyshen went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Miller, batting leadoff, reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.
In total, eight Salem batters recorded a hit and five scored a run, including Miller, Allday and Yoilan Cerse scoring three times apiece. Dubon, Procyshen, Heller and Rijo drove in two runs each.
Salem will look to sweep its first series of the second half on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Trey Ball (6-5, 3.80) will go for the Sox against the Keys’ David Hess (2-4, 5.83). Saturday is Mullets for Men’s Health Night with the first 500 fans receiving a free mullet and mustache in support of the Movember foundation.
