New first-base coach adjusting to VBL

Chris Graham

Mike Knight is in the mist of his first year with the Waynesboro Generals, and loving it.

Before joining the staff of Generals head coach Derek McDaniel, Knight was both a player and coach at Waynesboro High School. Despite going to the state tournament in his senior year at WHS, Knight quit baseball and was comfortable enough to share it as a serious “regret.”

His “favorite” aspect of coaching was refreshingly nice to hear when he said “the kids,” and then went on about the kids being the core of the game and the reason he coaches.

Prior to home games, Knight is the man in charge of field prep and is joined by the other coaches in the office to map out the night’s game. During a game Knight can be found by first base or in the dugout.

His approach to the game can be characterized by his phrase “art form,” involving, as he details, “pay(ing) attention to detail, communication is important, and think quick.”

This year has been a “challenge that I wanted to take on,” said Knight. Despite how much more “difficult” this year has been thus far, he enjoys working with the older kids and the better players.
