jonathan papelbonThe Washington Nationals have assigned RHP Jonathan Papelbon to the Potomac Nationals to begin a rehabilitation assignment. The right-handed closer will join the P-Nats Monday night for the second half home opener at Pfitzner Stadium, as the P-Nats host the Winston-Salem Dash at 7:05pm.

No determination has been made as to how long Papelbon will stay with Potomac, as the righty is amidst his recovery from a right intercostal strain. The Nationals’ closer was placed on the 15-day DL on June 14th, retroactive to June 13th.

The 35-year-old Papelbon has 16 saves thus far for the Nationals in 2016 and is 1-2 with a 3.28 ERA through his first 25 outings. The Nationals acquired Papelbon on 7/28/15 in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies that sent RHP Nick Pivetta to Philadelphia.

Papelbon, who is pitching for his third different MLB organization, is on his first rehab assignment of his career following his first DL stint as a professional. The righty pitched the first seven years of his MLB career for the Boston Red Sox before he signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies prior to the 2012 season. Papelbon has 365 career saves and a 2.38 career ERA. He was selected in the third round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox and debuted with Boston in 2005. His debut with the P-Nats will mark his first Minor League appearance since 2005 when he pitched for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox.

The Potomac Nationals of the Carolina League play at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, Virginia, and are the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The Potomac Nationals have claimed five Carolina League Championship titles (1982, 1989, 2008, 2010, and 2014) and nine CL Northern Division Championships. Potomac Nationals 2016 season tickets, mini plans, and single game tickets are now on sale. Sponsorship opportunities for the 2016 season and beyond are available.

Corporate outing reservations for the 2016 season to watch the future stars of the Washington Nationals at The Pfitz may be placed now as the P-Nats offer discounted group ticket rates and all-inclusive picnics.
