Motorists may encounter slick conditions Saturday in Central Virginia

Chris Graham

vdot road workVDOT mobilized overnight to prepare for the forecast arrival of a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain. The storm is expected to affect roads across Piedmont Virginia this morning.

VDOT crews reported to work late Friday night and early this morning, and snow plows deployed across the nine counties of VDOT’s Culpeper District. At this hour roads are reported clear but conditions are likely to change as the storm arrives from the southwest. VDOT crews spread a mix of salt and sand to improve traction and help melt the slushy mix.

Anyone with travel plans Saturday morning should check road conditions before they leave and be alert for slick roads as conditions may change through the morning. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions along the route.

Temperatures should rise above freezing Saturday afternoon and the precipitation is forecast to change from a wintry mix to rain before ending overnight.

Additional information about winter-weather preparations and response can be found at www.virginiadot.org/travel/snow.asp. Local updates are posted to Twitter.com/VaDOTCulp.

VDOT’s Culpeper District includes the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock.
