Mets take series opener from Nationals

washington nationalsA three-run homer by David Wright keyed a five-run fifth for the New York Mets in a 7-1 win over the Washington Nationals Monday night.

Yoenis Cespedes also homered for the Mets (26-18), who moved to within a half-game of the Nats (27-18) in the National League East with the win.

Bartolo Colon (4-3, 3.44 ERA) got the win for New York, allowing a run on five hits in seven innings, striking out two and walking two.

Gio Gonzalez (3-2, 2.87 ERA) took the loss for Washington, getting touched up for seven runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.

Ryan Zimmerman had two hits, including a first-inning RBI single, for the Nats, who also got two hits from Jayson Werth and Daniel Murphy, who is now hitting .389 on the season.
