Men’s soccer: VMI travels to Appalachian State on Saturday

vmiAfter opening the season with two home games, the VMI men’s soccer team hits the road for the first time this season as the Keydets travel to Boone, North Carolina, to face Appalachian State at 7 p.m. at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

The Keydets (0-2) look to get on the scoreboard after being held scoreless in outings this past week against Longwood and Liberty.

The Flames took a 3-0 lead into the half on Tuesday before tacking on two more goals to finish with a 5-0 victory over VMI at Patchin Field. Tresor Mbuyu led Liberty with his first career hat trick.

VMI was able to get off four shot attempts against the Flames including freshmen Carson Knox, Marco Reyes, Justin Riescher and TJ Hurd.

Freshman Broden Schull has seen all 180 minutes in the goalbox thus far and owns a 4.00 goals-against average, 15 saves and a .652 save percentage.

About the Mountaineers (2-0, 0-0 Sun Belt)

Following a round of exhibition matches in mid-August, App State opened the season last weekend in Jacksonville, Florida, with victories over Jacksonville (3-2, OT) on Friday and a 2-0 victory over North Florida on Sunday. The matchup with VMI marks the home opener for the Mountaineers as the Keydets are on the road for the first time in 2018.

Camden Holbrook leads the Mountaineers with four goals on the season to go with 10 shot attempts, including five on frame. Alex Hernandez scored the other goal for App State this season and ranks second on the team in shots with four. Charlie Baird and Ian Bennett are also proven threats with three and two shots, respectively, to their credit.

Jake Chasteen has played all 190 minutes in the goal box and owns a 0.95 goals-against average and six saves.
