vmi_logoDespite knotting the game at 1-1 early in the second half, the VMI men’s soccer team allowed two goals in the final 30 minutes to lift host Furman to a 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.

After a quick Paladin goal in the fourth minute of the game, VMI’s Alex Hartman got a foot on the ball following a scrum in the box early in the second period and put it into the net to tie the score at one apiece at the 51:58 mark. The goal was Hartman’s first of the season, resulting in all seven of VMI’s goals this season being scored by separate individuals. Eric Friese and Grant Austin were credited with assists as the goal came after a free kick and both put a foot on it in the effort.

Ten minutes later, Furman’s Marco Carrizales put the Paladins back on top, 2-1, after a free kick from 20 yards out to the left of the goal. Moments later, Carrizales took a corner kick which teammate Brendan Richardson got a header on at the near post and snuck it into the goal for an insurance goal and 3-1 advantage.

Despite several rallying attempts in the final 25 minutes by the Keydets, the remainder of the match saw no additional scores for the final result. VMI keeper Alex Guerra earned four saves on the night while Furman goalie Sven Lissek tallied one.

The Keydets stay on the road this weekend as they will travel to Mercer to face the Bears Saturday at noon in Macon, Georgia.
