Malcolm Brogdon among four UVA athletes at Pan-American Games

Brogdon_Malcolm_12MMalcolm Brogdon (Men’s Basketball/United States) and three former University of Virginia athletes will compete at the 2015 Pan American Games, held July 10-26 in Toronto.

Former Cavaliers Paige Selenski (Field Hockey/United States) and Michelle Vittese (Field Hockey/United States) and Payton Hazzard (Men’s Track and Field/Grenada) join Brogdon at the Pan American Games.

Brogdon was one of 12 players named to the U.S. Pan American Men’s Basketball Team, which will train July 13-16 at the Chicago Bulls practice facility before leaving for Toronto. The men’s basketball competition will take place July 21-25. The U.S. men have been placed into Group A and will play all three of its preliminary round games at 9 p.m. EDT, including Venezuela on July 21, Puerto Rico on July 22 and Brazil on July 23. Competing in Group B will be Argentina, Canada, Dominican Republic and Mexico.

The top two teams from each preliminary-round group will advance to the medal-round semifinals on July 24, while the third and fourth-placed teams will play for fifth-eighth places. The semifinal winners will compete for the gold medal on July 25, and the semifinal losers will play for bronze.

Class of 2012 graduates Selenski and Vittese and the U.S. Women’s Field Hockey National Team will be vying for a spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Team USA begins pool play on Monday, July 13, taking on Uruguay before facing Chile on Wednesday, July 15 and Cuba on Friday, July 17. Quarterfinals begin on Monday, July 20 with the championship game slated for Friday, July 24.

Selenski and Vittese were members of the U.S. National Team that won the gold medal at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, México as well as competing at the 2012 London Olympics. Selenski and Vittese have each earned 122 international caps.

Class of 2015 graduate Hazzard will compete in the men’s 400 meters for Grenada. A three-time All-American, Hazzard also captured three ACC titles, including the 400m at the ACC Indoor meet in February. He also represented Grenada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
