Longwood University battled for a hard-fought 79-77 come-from-behind men’s basketball victory on the road at Brown University of the Ivy League Wednesday night in Providence, Rhode Island.
The Lancers (6-11) trailed the Bears (5-11) by as many as 13 points late in the first half, and were behind 75-68 late in the game before outscoring Brown 11-2 over the final 3:28, including the game-winning basket by senior Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) with 2.2-seconds remaining.
LU won its first road game of the season and was led by senior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with his 33rd career double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Bowman finished with 19 points, including his decisive runner in the lane, adding a game-high five assists. Brown was led by Sean McGonagill with a season-high and game-high 30 points.
“That was a great game, and a great effort from our guys to hang in there for 40 minutes,” said ninth-year head coach Mike Gillian. “If we succeed at giving that kind of effort, mentally and physically, the results we are trying to achieve will take care of themselves. The mental discipline is being able to overcome adversity during the course of the game, something we certainly had to do many times tonight. The physical is simply giving everything you can at every position, for every possession — and knowing you still have something left when you really need it at the end of the game. We proved to ourselves we had plenty left at the end of the game tonight, because we won the last four minutes on both ends of the floor — and won the game.”
Longwood led early at Brown while in front 8-5 at 17:23 on a basket from Carter. The Bears, however, answered with a 14-4 run to lead 19-12 at 13:10 as five different players scored points, including a rare four-point play by McGonagill who was fouled while making a three-point field goal. The Lancers were within 28-22 at 9:40 following a three-pointer from sophomore transfer Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach (La Salle), but Brown responded with a 17-10 run to take its largest lead of the game at 45-32 with 4:15 left in the half. Longwood, though, refused to let the game get away and fought back with nine-straight points to pull within 45-41 at 1:41 — getting four points from Carter that included a steal and one-handed slam dunk during the spurt. The Bears led 46-41 at the intermission after making a free throw with no time on the first-half clock.
Longwood continued its momentum and took its first lead of the second half at 51-50 with 15:16 left on a jumper by Carter. Brown, however, used a 12-5 run to lead 62-56 at 10:54 after a layup from Andrew McCarthy. The Lancers again answered and scored seven-straight points to lead 63-62 at 7:24 on another basket inside by Carter. The Bears looked like they might be in control after a 13-5 run to lead 75-68 at 3:49. Longwood, though, had other ideas and went on a 9-0 run to lead 77-75 at 1:10 as senior Jan van der Kooij|Tiendeveen, The Netherlands (Roelof van Echten) made a three-pointer, classmate Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch) had a steal and layup, Bowman a tying layup, and Carter a go-ahead layup. McGonagill made two free throws to tie it at 77-77 with 23.6-seconds left, before Bowman made his game-winning runner with 2.2-seconds on the clock. Brown missed a desperation three-point attempt from near midcourt at the buzzer.
Carter led Longwood with his 33rd career double-double, and sixth this season, consisting of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Bowman finished with 19 points and a game-high five assists for the Lancers. van der Kooij had 14 points and eight rebounds, Carey added 13 points, and Washington contributed nine 10 points. LU shot 52% (33-63) from the field, including 42% (8-19) on three-pointers, and 46% (5-11) at the free throw line.
McGonagill led Brown with his season-high and game-high 30 points. McCarthy added 16 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, while Stephen Albrecht added 15 points for the Bears. Brown shot 40% (26-65) from the field, including 37% (10-27) on three-pointers, and 75% (15-20) at the line.
It was the first meeting between the two schools in the sport.
