Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader on the road at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County of the America East Conference Saturday afternoon in Baltimore.
The visiting Lancers (21-10) won game one against the host Retrievers (3-16) by a score of 11-0 before winning in game two by a score of 8-4. Senior captain Brant Jones|Richmond (Monacan), along with freshmen Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) and Alex Owens| Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) each hit home runs in the opener with Burkett and Owens each providing three RBI, while junior Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) added a home run and four RBI in the nightcap. It is the 30th overall 20-win campaign in the program’s 34-year history.
In the seven-inning opener, Longwood scored one run in the second, three runs in the third, three runs in the fifth, and four runs in the seventh. The Lancers got started early in the second when Owens (2-4, 3 rbi) hit a one-out, RBI double that scored sophomore Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker ) (3-5, rbi) who had doubled as well. In the third, Jones (2-3, 2 rbi) had a run-scoring single, Lacy had an RBI double, and junior Dustin Sollars|Midlothian (Cosby) (1-2, rbi) contributed an RBI single. In the fifth, Jones and Burkett (2-5, 3 rbi) hit back-to-back solo homers to left field, respectively, and freshman Adam Blankinship|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (1-3, rbi) added an RBI single. In the seventh, Owens hit a two-run home run to right-center field before Burkett provided a two-run single. Freshman Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (2-4) also had two hits in the game for the visitors.
Senior captain Chris Briere|Midlothian (James River) (5-2) gained the Longwood pitching win with the first 5.0 shutout innings, scattering nine hits with one strikeout and two walks. Freshmen Ryan Schubert|Springfield (Annandale) and Kyle Hall|Reedsville (Northumberland) combined with Briere on the shutout with an inning each as Schubert allowed two hits and Hall had one strikeout.
Curtis Schickner (3-3) had three hits to lead UMBC in game one, while starter Mike Mitchell (0-4) took the mound loss.
In the nine-inning nightcap, Longwood scored one run in the first and four runs in the fourth to lead 5-0. UMBC scored three runs in the fourth, and one run in the fifth to close to within 5-4 through six innings. The Lancers closed it out with one run in the seventh, and two more runs in the eighth for the twinbill sweep. In the first, Dickason (2-4, rbi) walked to lead-off and later scored during a run-down between first and second base. In the fourth, Newman (2-4, 4 rbi) hit a three-run home run to left field followed by a walk to Briere (0-3) who later crossed the plate via a throwing error.
UMBC got RBI in the fourth from Max Himmelstein (0-4, rbi) and Brian Klukowicz (0-3, rbi) while another run scored via a wild pitch, and in the fifth, Schickner (2-4, rbi) had a run-scoring single. Burkett (1-5, rbi) added a two-out, RBI single in the seventh for Longwood before Newman and Dickason contributed run-scoring singles in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Freshman Cory Ramsey|Petersburg (Matoaca) (4-2) picked-up the Longwood pitching win with the first 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Kyler Morgan|Lancaster, Pa. (Lampeter-Strasburg) (1) earned his first career save with the final 3.0 scoreless innings, yieldng no hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Rich Conlon (2-3) also had two hits for UMBC in game two, while starter Jon Cohn (0-4) took the mound loss.
