Media timeout: Syracuse 8-7, 15:50/1st
Virginia has already been whistled for four fouls; not sure about any of the calls.
From game to game, no consistency in how games are called.
Today, it’s breathe-on-guys contact getting whistles on our end.
Syracuse uses lots of moving slip screens to free guys up; how about calling those?
Media timeout: Virginia 16-12, 11:44/1st
These idiots – Roger Ayers, AJ Desai, Adam Flore – are getting paid by the call.
Hard to watch.
Sam Lewis got two cheapies, replaced by Devin Tillis, who got two cheapies.
Giving Martin Carrere rare non-garbage time minutes.
Carrere scored on a roll to the hoop off a dribble penetration by Dallin Hall against a zone.
Syracuse timeout: Virginia 28-16, 8:30/1st

Syracuse timeout: Virginia 55-46, 12:45/2nd
A Syracuse turnover in the backcourt led to a Sam Lewis three, and a turnover on a secondary break led to a Ugonna Onyenso follow-up dunk.
Media timeout: Virginia 55-46, 11:24/2nd
This will frustrate the sh*t out of you: past two possessions, de Ridder had Nate Kingz, a 6’4″ guard, on him in the post.
First possession, de Ridder passed out of it, and then Tillis attempted a fancy entry pass to Onyenso, turnover.
Second possession, de Ridder backed Kingz down, the double came, and de Ridder threw the ball into the fifth row.
Media timeout: Virginia 59-50, 7:58/2nd
This is around the time in the first half when Syracuse made a run.
What they did then was, stop trying zone.
Media timeout: Virginia 65-57, 2:54/2nd
Still a game. Virginia hasn’t been able to get a working margin. ‘Cuse just had it down to four.
Second-half offensive rebounding has been a lot better: 13 ORs, 46.4 percent OR rate, leading to nine second-chance points.
Final: Virginia 72, Syracuse 59
‘Cuse got it down to 65-59 on a Nate Kingz layup with 2:34 to go.
Two biggest plays of the game courtesy Chance Mallory: drained a three with 2:17 to go, then, after a Syracuse miss, he connected with Ugonna Onyenso on an alley-oop that pushed the lead to 11 with 1:25 to go.
Quick recap
Virginia got 16 points from Sam Lewis, and 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks from Ugonna Onyenso, to get past Syracuse, 72-59, on Saturday.
The score makes it look a little easier than it was.
Virginia (20-3, 9-2 ACC) led by 12 with 8:20 to go in the first half, but ‘Cuse (13-11, 4-7 ACC) got back to square late in the half, before a late three by Jacari White put UVA up 38-35 at the break.
The ‘Hoos never trailed, but the game remained in single digits most of the rest of the way, and the Orange actually, briefly, got the margin down to four, on a free throw by JJ Starling, that made it 61-57 with 5:10 to go.
It was 65-59 with 2:34 left after a Nate Kingz layup.
A Chance Mallory three got the lead back to nine, and then, after a ‘Cuse miss, Mallory connected with Onyenso for an alley-oop slam that got the lead to 70-59 at the 1:25 mark.
Mallory, the backup point guard, and Dallin Hall, the starter at the point, each had five points, five assists and four rebounds.
Virginia’s leading scorer on the season, Thijs de Ridder, struggled all day – finishing with nine points (3-of-11 FG, 0-of-4 3FG, 3-of-5 FT) and five rebounds.
