I’m at JPJ on Oct. 9 for a live men’s basketball game, which, even though it doesn’t count, so what? It’s college basketball on Oct. 9.
Virginia is hosting Richmond.
Don’t expect much.
The coaches aren’t going to be treating this one like a must-win or anything.
Media timeout: Richmond 11-9, 15:55/1st
I like what Richmond is doing offensively – lots of dribble handoffs, which Virginia is having trouble catching up on.
UR is 5-of-7 from the field: four short jumpers and a dribble drive to the rim, and an offensive rebound three.
Virginia is 2-of-7, 2-of-5 from three, with a couple of trips to the free-throw line.
Rather disjointed on offense at the start.
Media timeout: Richmond 17-12, 11:36/1st
Nine guys have gotten in for Virginia so far.
Martin Carrere just made a three, which is his job.
Three ugly turnovers by the subs – one each by Carrere, Jan Vide and Jurian Dixon.
Ugly meaning, awful, terrible idea passes leading to turnovers.
Media timeout: Virginia 21-20, 7:58/1st
Virginia is on a 9-0 run over the last 1:51.
Chance Mallory is looking in midseason form: nine points, 2-of-3 FG, 1-of-2 3FG, 4-of-4 at the line, with a 1-and-1 coming after the break.
Mallory is donning a headband: is there soon going to be a Mall-army?
Johann Grunloh has five rebounds in nine minutes, but he’s just 1-of-6 from the floor.
Richmond timeout: Virginia 32-20, 6:07/1st
The run is now 20-0. Virginia has made six of its last eight, four of them threes.
Richmond, which started 5-of-7 from the floor, is now 9-of-26.
Media timeout: Virginia 36-20, 3:39/1st
Virginia is 8-of-16 from three and 8-of-10 at the line.
That’s modern basketball.
Seven different guys have made threes. Carrere is the guy with two.
Malcolm Brogdon is in the house.
Half: Virginia 43-28
Richmond didn’t make a bucket from the floor in the final 10:17 of the first half.
I was wrong, at least for the first 20 minutes, about how this game would be approached by the coaches, in terms of the minutes they’re doling out.
Four of UVA’s starters got double-digit minutes: Johann Grunloh (17), Sam Lewis (13), Thijs de Ridder (12) and Chance Mallory (10).
Ryan Odom used 12 guys for at least three minutes.
Chris Mooney got double-digit minutes for seven of his rotation guys, and used three other guys.
Shooting
- UVA: 12-of-32 FG, 8-of-19 3FG, 11-of-16 FT
- Richmond: 9-of-34 FG, 2-of-12 3FG, 8-of-8 FT
Rebounds: Virginia 28-20
- UVA offensive rebound rate: 11-of-23 (47.8%)
- UVA defensive rebound rate: 17-of-25 (68.0%)
Tempo: 34 possessions
- UVA offensive PPP: 1.265
- UVA defensive PPP: 0.823
Notable
- Johann Grunloh: seven points (2-of-8 FG, 1-of-4 3FG, 2-of-4 FT), eight rebounds
- Chance Mallory: 12 points (2-of-3 FG, 1-of-2 3FG, 7-of-8 FT), one assist
Media timeout: Virginia 57-28, 15:48/2nd
Virginia opens on a 14-0 run.
Richmond’s last made bucket from the floor was around 45 minutes ago in real time.
UR has missed its last 22 shots from the floor.
That good action they were getting off the DHOs before … Odom figured it out.
Another media timeout, for some reason: Virginia 61-31, 14:20/2nd
Observations:
- Favour Ibe is obviously a project, but he’s already grown-ass-man size for an 18-year-old. Awkward as hell, but he’s got five fouls, if we want to use them.
- Jan Vide is a slick lefty backup point guard with size (6’7″) who can rebound and run the floor. His game reminds me a bit of Ben Simmons.
- Nolan Adekunle‘s game reminds me a bit of Malcolm Brogdon. Adekunle has size (6’6″), broad shoulders, and a lot of balance in his game.
Media timeout: Virginia 67-34, 11:18, 2nd
More observations:
- No Christian Harmon tonight.
- Jurian Dixon looks ragged: five minutes to this point, two ugly, forced misses, two fouls.
- Elijah Gertrude has gotten 12 minutes off the bench.
Final: Virginia 96, Richmond 53
Final observations:
- 12 guys got double-digit minutes
Most impressed with:
- Elijah Gertrude: 11 points, three made threes, in 17 minutes
- Jan Vide: 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, in 21 minutes
- Martin Carrere: 12 points, four made threes, in 16 minutes
- Favour Ibe: seven points, seven rebounds, in 13 minutes
Starters with good nights:
- Thijs de Ridder: 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, in 20 minutes
- Johann Grunloh: nine points, nine boards, in 23 minutes
- Chance Mallory: 12 points, three rebounds, one assist, in 13 minutes
- Nolan Adekunle: nine points, three rebounds, in 16 minutes
