Little Dribblers learn basketball at the Waynesboro YMCA

Charity Steed learned basketball under John Spears 20 years ago. Now her son, Kaden, 4, is learning the game the way she did.

“I’m just glad he’s still here to teach him,” said Steed at a recent Little Dribblers class at the Waynesboro YMCA.

Spears, the youth sports director at the Waynesboro Y, is a respected long-time local coach and high-school and college referee who has coached literally thousands of children in his three decades at the Y.

The Y started the Little Dribblers program six years ago to get kids into the game at an early age.

“You see kids in this day and age, and they’re doing things at a younger age than they did a generation ago. It’s amazing what these kids can already do,” Spears asid.

The basics covered in Little Dribblers include dribbling, proper shooting form, passing, catching and defense.

More information about the program – and other programs offered at the Waynesboro YMCA – is online at WaynesboroYMCA.com.
