liberty basketballLiberty moved to 10-3 for the first time since 1991, as they defeated Alabama State, in the opening round of the St. Pete Shootout.

The Flames made it difficult for Alabama State on offense from the tip, as the Hornets missed their first 10 field goal attempts. While Liberty held Alabama State to 23.8 percent from the field in the first half, the Flames shot 63.2 percent from the field, led by Keenan Gumbs and Keegan McDowell with eight points each.

“I thought our group was terrific this afternoon,” Liberty coach Ritchie McKay said. “We were really good defensively and I thought we were able to spread out the minutes going into tomorrow’s game. Keegan came in and made a couple of shots and was sound defensively and Keenan’s defensive effort was awesome. We are going to need everyone tomorrow for whoever we are going to play.”

The Flames will conclude the St. Pete Shootout in the Championship matchup against the winner of the Austin Peay/Campbell game. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. at Eckerd College.
