Footgolf has made it to Staunton. This fairly new sport is a combination of soccer and golf. It is played all over the world, and can now be played at Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton. The course is open all week and costs $10 for adults, $8 for 17-year-olds and under, and $25 for a family of 4 or more.
Footgolf is played with a regulation #5 soccer ball, which is used to kick into a 21-inch diameter cup in the least amount of strokes. The rules are just the same as golf, the only difference being a soccer ball instead of a golf ball and your foot instead of a golf club. There are 18 holes, and it can be played alongside other golfers. Mandatory attire for footgolf tournaments consists of turf or indoor soccer shoes, flat cap, collared shirt, golf shorts and knee high argyle socks.
Although the dress code is not strict for play time at the park, it still may be fun to dress the part. Golf carts are not permitted on the course for footgolf because Gypsy Hill promotes healthy and active living and encourage families to come out to learn and spend time together.
Hunter Fitzgerald, a senior soccer player at Wilson Memorial High School, shared his footgolfing experience as “different and fun.” He also shares that the hills makes the game a little difficult, but he enjoys the challenge. Fitzgerald encourages everyone to try it with their friends and/or family to guarantee that great and quality time will be spent.
