Maryland’s Lauren Merrifield scored four times to lead the unbeaten and top-ranked Terrapins (10-0) to a 17-8 home win over 10th-ranked James Madison (6-2) in women’s lacrosse Saturday afternoon.
Maryland, the defending NCAA champion, scored the game’s first two goals and pushed its lead to 7-1 with 4:32 left in the first half. Dukes’ junior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach , Fla./Vero Beach) scored twice in the final 2:25 of the first period to close the gap to 8-3 at intermission, but the Dukes could get no closer.
Merrifield was one of six Terps to score multiple goals, including Karrie Ellen Johnson, who contributed three goals and an assist.
Lane was the Dukes’ top scorer with three goals, and she also had an assist and a caused turnover. Redshirt sophomore Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) finished with two goals, an assist, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Junior Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) also scored twice and had two draw controls.
JMU junior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) led all players with a game-high five draw controls. She also had a goal and an assist.
Dukes’ redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest) made 11 saves. Terrapin goaltender Brittany Dipper made seven stops.
It was the second straight loss for the Dukes, with both defeats coming on the road to teams ranked in the top six in the national rankings.
