Redshirt-junior attacker Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) picked up five goals for the Dukes, surpassing 100 goals in her career but the 13th-ranked James Madison women’s lacrosse team fell to Richmond 13-12 on Saturday. With the loss the Dukes fell to 3-3 on the season while the Spiders improved to 3-3.
With the game tied at 12 apiece, Richmond’s Caitlin Fifield took a long pass from Sam Stevenson and beat Madison goaltender Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest) to put the Spiders up by one with just 24 seconds remaining. JMU was unable to win the draw control allowing Richmond to run out the clock for the win.
The Dukes opened with a 2-1 lead over the Spiders at 22:24 on goals by Ancarrow and senior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) but back to back goals by Fifield put Richmond up by one with 17:03 left to play in the first half.
Richmond scored seven consecutive goals from 20:36 to 7:46 to build a six point lead, 8-2, before JMU struck back with five goals to end the half. Sophomore Amy Roguski (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) got the run started for the Dukes, scoring her first goal of the game with 6:04 left to play. The Dukes also got two goals from Ancarrow, a goal from Zable and a second goal from Roguski during the run. Ancarrow netted her third goal of the game, the 100th of her career, with 27 seconds remaining in the first half to cut the Spiders’ lead to 8-7.
Richmond’s Kara Moschetti opened the second half scoring, beating Menghetti just 1:37 into the second period to put the Spiders up 9-7, and Mary Flowers made it a three-goal game with 22:39 remaining on her second goal of the afternoon.
JMU fought back to within one, 10-9, with 20:37 left to play on Ancarrow’s 17th goal of the season and a man-up goal by Roguski. The Spiders, however, pulled away again on goals by Janie Penney and Flowers’ third goal of the game.
With just over two minutes remaining the Dukes began to mount a comeback. Roguski scored her fourth and fifth goals of the game, the latter coming with 54 seconds left and Ancarrow added her fifth of the game to knot it up at 12 with 33 seconds to go.
Fifield notched the game winner, her third of the game, with 24 ticks on the clock and Richmond was able to run out the clock after controlling the ensuing draw.
Ancarrow and Roguski tied for a game high five goals for the Dukes while Flowers and Fifield each scored three goals for the Spiders. Sam Stevenson paced Richmond with four assists while Zabel added two goals and four assists for JMU.
The Dukes return to action Saturday, March 17 against No. 17 Loyola (Md.) in a 1 p.m. matchup
