JMU women open CAA play with road win

jmu logoJames Madison (7-6, 1-0) opened Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball play Sunday afternoon with a 60-39 road win at North Carolina Wilmington (1-11, 0-1) at Trask Coliseum.

JMU won its fourth straight contest, while UNCW dropped its eighth in a row.

Junior guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) scored a game-high 15 points and had nine rebounds for the Dukes.  Sophomore forward Toia Giggetts (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) added a season-high 11 points, and redshirt senior guard Jasmine Gill (Greensboro, N.C./Page) grabbed a career and game-high 12 rebounds.

UNCW was led in scoring by Tawanna Lee with 11.  Jovana Mandic was the Seahawks’ top rebounder with 10.

UNCW scored the game’s first basket but JMU tallied the next seven points and did not trail after that point.  The Dukes were up 34-15 at halftime.

JMU senior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) scored seven points and had a game-high five assists.  She increased her career points total to 1,466 and moved into eighth place on the Dukes’ all-time scoring list.  Hislop passed Sue Manelski (1981-85), who scored 1,465 points.
