JMU uses late run to pull away: Dukes knock off W&M

Five players scored in double figures and the James Madison (9-5, 2-0 CAA) women’s basketball team used a 19-8 run in the final 5:50 to fend off William and Mary (1-11, 0-2) 89-75 in Colonial Athletic Association action on Thursday night at Kaplan Arena.

Senior guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) scored a game-high 29 points and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line to break the JMU career record for made free throws (458), surpassing Lesley Dickinson’s (2003-07) record of 457.

Senior center Lauren Jimenez (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) posted her fourth double-double of the season with a career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt junior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) also had her third double-double of the year with 12 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) and senior guard Courtney Hamner (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) also recorded double figures with 14 and 12 points.

JMU led 20-15 with 9:39 remaining in the first half, before the Tribe went on a 12-4 run over the next 6:30 to take a 27-24 lead. The Dukes ended the first half on a 9-4 run to take a 33-31 advantage into the locker room.

The game remained close early into the second half, but leading by a point at 42-41 with 16:58 to go in regulation, JMU scored 17 of the game’s next 21 points to take its largest lead of the game at 59-45 with 12:56 to play.

The Tribe answered back cutting the Dukes’ lead down three points on two separate occasions with the last coming at 70-67 with 5:50 to play, but JMU ended the game on a 19-8 run to secure its fourth-straight victory.

William and Mary was led by sophomore forward Emily Correal, who scored a career-high 25 points. Junior guard Taysha Pye and sophomore guard/forward Taylor Hilton each scored 15 points, respectively. Pye needs just one point in her next game to reach 1,000 points for her career.
