JMU struck for nine runs in the third inning and pounded out a season-high 16 hits while four pitchers tossed a three-hitter to win the second game of a baseball doubleheader against Binghamton, 14-1, after dropping the opener 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
Just like Saturday, the visitors claimed the seven-inning opening game before Madison rebounded to coast to a game two win to finish with a 2-2 split in the four-game set. JMU stands at 2-5 on the season while BU sits at 2-2 after its first weekend of action.
Game Two – James Madison 14, Binghamton 1
JMU grabbed an early big lead at 4-0 in the second game and broke the game open with nine runs in the third to coast to the 14-1 victory.
Sophomore outfielder Chad Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) was 3-for-4 with four runs, four RBIs, a home run and a triple to help lead the offense. Senior right fielder Cole McInturff (Centreville, Va./Westfield) had two hits and five RBIs. Both players hit three-run home runs in the game.
Redshirt junior first baseman Matt Tenaglia (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) was 3-for-4 with three runs and a pair of doubles. Sophomore infielder Tyler Duke (Troutville, Va./James River) was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of walks. Junior third baseman Ty McFarland (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) also had two hits with a walk and two runs scored.
Not to be overshadowed by the 16 hits from the offense, four JMU pitchers combined to toss a three-hitter. Redshirt sophomore Michael Howerton (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) rebounded from a tough first outing to allow one run on three hits over six innings to improve to 1-0.
Mike Meleski took the loss after allowing nine runs, seven earned, on seven hits in two innings.
After dropping the opener 5-1, JMU jumped out early in the second game with a walk and two singles loading the bases with one out. Chad Carroll and Tyler Duke each collected bases-loaded walks to stake the Dukes to an early 2-0 lead. Cole McInturff added a two-run single to left to make it a four-run first.
Madison then blew things open with a nine spot in the third to go up 13-0 after three innings. The Dukes loaded the bases on a pair of hits and a dropped fly ball. A passed ball and an RBI single by Duke made it 5-0 before McInturff unloaded on a three-run shot to right center to make it 9-0. After a pitching change, JMU kept the inning going with an RBI double by Tenaglia, his second two-bagger of the inning, and a second three-run homer, this time by Chad Carroll, to make it 13-0.
The final JMU run came in the eighth as Carroll triple and scored on a double by Duke to make it 14-1.
Game One – Binghamton 5, James Madison 1
In the opener, first baseman Jordan Smucker had the big blow with a three-run home run to right field in the fourth inning to break open a scoreless game. The Bearcats used three JMU errors in the seventh to add a pair of insurance runs.
The Dukes loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff triple by senior Colby Roberts (Benton, Ark./Benton) and a pair of hit batters. However, the Bearcats induced a double play to limit JMU to one run to clinch the 5-1 win.
Jack Rogalla earned the win with five shutout innings while Greg Ostner tossed the final two frames for his first save.
In addition to Smucker’s three-run blast, Bijan Mangouri was 3-for-3 for BU while Jake Thomas singled and walked twice.
JMU had six hits in the game with McFarland the only player with multiple hits. Freshman Michael Church (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) took the loss in his first collegiate start after allowing three runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Madison continues its stretch of 18 out of 19 games at home on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. outing against Maryland.
