JMU gets good news from GA

Big news for James Madison University coming out of the Virginia General Assembly yesterday.

State legislators approved $2.6 billion in bonds for capital-improvement projects at higher-education facilities, mental-health facilities and state parks. Included in the total were $167 million in capital projects at JMU.

The list features $44.8 million for the construction of a biotechnology building that is expcted to be a key component of the science corridor on the east side of the JMU campus. Work on that project will begin after July 1 with construction expected to be completed by 2011.

The General Assembly also approved $50 million in bonds for the construction of athletic and recreational fields at Port Republic and Neff, $40 million in bonds for the expansion of Bridgeforth Stadium, $10 million for auxiliary space at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, $2 million for a baseball/softball complex and $1.2 million for a performing arts center.

“We are pleased with the actions of the General Assembly. The approval of these projects assist in the advancement of higher education at JMU and across the Commonwealth,” JMU President Dr. Linwood H. Rose said.
