Quarterbacks Drew Dudzik (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and Justin Thorpe (Richmond, Va./Varina) directed touchdown drives during James Madison’s final spring football scrimmage at the University of Virginia Friday.

Friday’s intrasquad event completed the Dukes’ spring practice period and was held off campus because of the on-going renovation at JMU’s Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field. The stadium playing surface is being kept covered while the first phase of construction that eventually will expand the facility’s seating to approximately 25,000 is completed.

During Friday’s 33-play live scrimmage Dudzik threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to rising sophomore tight end Brian Barlow (Stephens City, Va./Sherando), and Thorpe scored on a one-yard run.

Dudzik, a rising senior, threaded his scoring pass over the middle to Barlow on a third-down-and-19 play to cap a 60-yard, seven-play series. Dudzik hit rising redshirt freshman wide receiver Dae’Quan Scott (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) on a 16-yard pass and threw 12 yards to rising sophomore tailback Lee Reynolds (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Poly Tech) on the possession’s second and third plays. An eight-yard loss and a procedure penalty had set the offense back after and a first down at the 13.

Thorpe, a rising sophomore, scored on a third-and-goal play at the end of a 60-yard, 11-play series. He completed two passes midway through the series, and rising junior tailback Scott Noble (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) had a 25-yard run and rising redshirt freshman tailback Jordan Anderson (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) a 12-yard carry during the possession.

Thorpe also led a drive that ended with a 38-yard field goal by rising junior placekicker Dixon Wright (Crossnore, N.C./Avery County). Anderson started the possession with a 20-yard carry and ran six times for 39 yards during the series.

Anderson ran eight times for 53 yards and Noble four times for 37 yards during the open scrimmage. Dudzik hit on five of six passes for 75 yards and Thorpe on two of two for eight yards.

JMU will open its 11-game 2010 season in a Sept. 11 home game with Morehead State.
