Jim Larranaga to receive Mason Medal at commencement ceremony

jim larranagaGeorge Mason University has announced that a Mason Medal will be awarded to Coach Jim Larranaga at the university’s 2016 Commencement Ceremony. The Mason Medal is the Mason Board of Visitors’ highest honor. Those who receive the award have a record of service consistent with the public service of George Mason in his own time.

Larranaga guided the Mason men’s basketball team to five NCAA tournament appearances during his 14 years as head coach, including a rousing run to the 2006 Final Four that brought the university unprecedented national recognition.

In becoming the first mid-major school to reach the Final Four in 27 years, the Patriots in the 2006 NCAA tournament knocked off Michigan State, No. 10 North Carolina, Wichita State, and No. 2 Connecticut. Mason posted 13 consecutive winning seasons under Larranaga, now the men’s basketball coach at the University of Miami.

A celebration is planned to honor Larranaga, the players and the staff of the 2006 Mason men’s basketball team on Friday, June 17 at the Fairfax Campus.
