Jessica Masulli | Reform health care

A large portion of our spending goes toward health care, yet many Americans do not have health insurance. And, even for insured Americans, it is becoming increasingly difficult to afford quality health care.

Luckily for all Americans, health-care reform is on the horizon, but it is our job to hold the government responsible for the upcoming changes. We need to let them know that we want the option of a public health-insurance plan.

President Barack Obama has recommended $634 billion in funding over the next ten years to fix the health-care system. While this number may scare some people, it is a down payment for the future. The health-care system will need this type of reform whether we choose to deal with it now or in 10 years.

Americans are currently spending about $6,000 per person on health, according to the World Health Organization. In European nations that spend much less on health per person, people are living longer, healthier lives. Americans should be striving to reach such levels, a mission that can only begin with health-care reform.

Congress needs to support President Obama’s commitment to health care.
