Local News: Expect delays on I-64 between Afton and Crozet
Eastbound motorists on Interstate 64 should expect delays between Afton Mountain and Crozet for the next several weeks – particularly during peak travel time.
On Tuesday, May 26, a contractor for the Virginia Department of Transportation will close the left lane at the bridge over Stockton Creek near milepost 108. Concrete barriers, set up in preparation for milling and repairing the bridge deck, will restrict traffic to one lane throughout the work zone. When work on the left lane is completed the barrier will be shifted and the right lane will be closed so similar repairs can be performed.
Brief, complete closures of I-64 eastbound will be necessary on Tuesday morning to place the barriers. The complete closures, which will begin after 9 a.m., will be coordinated with the Virginia State Police, who will perform a “slow roll” to keep traffic out of the work zone. During the complete closures Tuesday morning the eastbound entry ramp at exit 108 will also be closed.
During the bridge rehabilitation project, strategically placed message boards will notify motorists of the work zone and suggest alternate routes. VDOT’s Traffic Operations Center personnel in Staunton will monitor cameras placed along I-64 to keep a close check on road and traffic conditions and report them to the public.
The concrete bridge deck will be milled to remove the worn travel surface, and then areas where the concrete has deteriorated will be identified and replaced. Once the patching is completed the bridge will be resurfaced with a latex-concrete travel surface that will increase the lifespan of the bridge. The latex makes the concrete less susceptible to damage and deterioration from moisture, salt and other chemicals.

Local News: Staunton PD needs help in solving hit-and-run
The Staunton Police Department is requesting assistance in identifying the driver of a vehicle that struck and injured the driver of a moped and fled the scene.
At around 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, a white or grey station wagon, driven by a white female, struck the victim’s moped after forcing it off the road. The crash occurred on Dogwood Road near Woodrow Avenue in the City of Staunton.

Local News: BRCC breaks ground on tech center
Blue Ridge Community College broke ground Wednesday for its Advanced Technology Center. The 20,500-square-foot facility will contain four program laboratories (machining, automated manufacturing, electronics and computer networking), a computer aided design laboratory, a research and development laboratory, a physics laboratory, two general purpose classrooms, faculty offices and various other support spaces.
The design firm of Moseley Architects has designed the building to LEED energy efficiency standards. Martin Brothers Contractors, of Roanoke, will serve as the general contractors for the $7.5 million center.
Since this building was first proposed in 2004, the College’s full-time equivalent student population has grown by almost 25 percent.
Event: Memorial Day service in Waynesboro
A service honoring military veterans will be held at Riverview Cemetery at the corner of Rosser Avenue and 13th Street in Waynesboro on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, at 11 a.m.
The guest speaker will be Maj. David McDaniel of the United States Army.
