A Virginia grand jury has indicted a man for a Feb. 17 homicide in Keysville where a hunter, who is alleged to have been intoxicated, shot and killed another man.
Jonathan A. Bailey, 47, of Buffalo Junction, faces four felony counts including homicide, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, assault in commission of a felony and reckless handling of a firearm. He is also charged with hunting with a firearm while intoxicated and shooting across a roadway.
The Lunenburg County grand jury indicted Bailey on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Bailey turned himself in at the Lunenburg Courthouse on Oct. 8 and is being held without bond. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 14.
The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources was informed by the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office about the fatal hunting incident on the evening of Feb. 17.
William C. Gaulding III, 54, of Victoria, was shot and killed by Bailey on Tuckers Road. Bailey was predator hunting with another person when he shot Bailey, who was also hunting in the area.
The investigation into the incident included cooperation between DWR, the Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office and the cybercrimes unit with the Albemarle County Police Department.
“This was a tragic incident that occurred due to negligence and a disregard for safety by Jonathan Bailey,” said Major Ryan Shuler, DWR chief/law enforcement director.
