How much do the squash, wrestling, field hockey and volleyball coaches at UVA make?

Way back on Jan. 23, UVA Athletics sent out a media release announcing contract extensions for head coaches Mark Allen (squash), Steve Garland (wrestling), Ole Keusgen (field hockey) and Shannon Wells (volleyball).

It’s now the official policy here at AFP that we don’t write about contract extensions until we get details – how long, how much.

I filed a Freedom of Information Act request on Jan. 23 to get the details.

It took until today – Feb. 10 – to get the answer.

And you think we’re ever going to know what the University did with that Title IX complaint in the Jahmal Edrine case?

Here’s what we know:

  • Mark Allen: he signed his contract on Oct. 6, and Carla Williams signed it on that date as well, but Paul Mahoney, the now-former interim president, signed on his end on Dec. 18. The five-year deal started on Aug. 1 and runs through the 2030 season, and pays him $195,265 a year in base pay and supplemental compensation.
  • Steve Garland: similar to the Allen deal, Garland signed on Oct. 3, Williams on Oct. 6, Mahoney on Dec. 18. This is one is a four-year run, beginning Aug. 1, running through the 2029 season, paying $153,422 a year in salary and supplemental compensation.
  • Ole Keusgen: signed on Oct. 13 (Keusgen and Williams) and Dec. 18 (Mahoney). Term beginning Aug. 1, running through the 2030 season. Base salary and supplemental compensation at $132,600 a year.
  • Shannon Wells: Wells signed on Oct. 17, Williams on Dec. 15, Mahoney on Dec. 18. Term beginning Aug. 1, running through the 2030 season. Base salary and supplemental compensation at $200,865 per year.
