House Dems help split GOP pass transportation deal

AFP

state-capitol2The House of Delegates passed the bipartisan transportation bill on a 60-40 vote on Friday, with 35 Republicans and 25 Democrats joining to form the majority.

The bill would reduce, but not fully eliminate, the state gas tax, as had been the case in legislation passed by the House last month. It also increases the state sales tax from 5 percent to 5.3 percent as a means to raise more money for transportation maintenance and construction.

“Democrats have been committed to finding a bipartisan solution to our transportation funding problems for years.  This bill, while not perfect, provides sufficient revenues to assist the Commonwealth in modernizing its transportation infrastructure.  It is long overdue, and I am pleased to support it,” said House Democratic Leader David Toscano (D- Charlottesville).

“For over two decades. members from both sides of aisle have struggled to address our pressing transportation needs.  Finally, we have a bill that will put us on a solid path.  The Commonwealth and her people will be well served,” said Former Transportation Secretary Del. Vivian Watts (D- Fairfax).
