Jacari White had 25 points, 22 in the second half – he didn’t miss in the game, was 8-of-8 in the second half, six of the makes threes – to counter a sloppy day 21-turnover day from the Virginia offense in an 86-73 win over Dayton.
Dayton (7-3) led for a long stretch of the first half, and it was 39-38 two minutes into the second half before a 13-3 run got the lead into double digits.
ICYMI
Remarkably, it was only then that White started on his historic heater.
His first three came at the 15:27 mark to put the lead to 14.
Those would be the first of 13 straight scored by White over the next 5:58.
That run would get the lead for UVA (8-1) to 21, before Dayton – fifth nationally in defensive turnover percentage coming in – put the clamps down.
A 14-0 Dayton run got the margin down to seven, forcing a Ryan Odom timeout – the ‘Hoos had three turnovers and two missed layups during the run.
Who else, White, ended the run with a three at the 2:58 mark to get the lead back into double digits.
The closest the Flyers got thereafter was eight, literally for one second in the final minute of play.
White finished with 25 points on nine shot attempts from the floor and no free-throw attempts.
Chance Mallory was the other Virginia player in double-figures with 12 – one make from the floor, 9-of-10 at the line.
The Cavaliers shot 60 percent (27-of-45) from the floor for the game, and was 12-of-20 – also 60 percent – from three.
Notes
- The turnover percentage was ghastly – 21 TOs on 69 possessions works out to a 30.4 percent TO rate.
- Only six offensive rebounds, problem there being, Virginia only missed 18 shots.
- The ‘Hoos still owned the boards: 41-25.
- Thijs de Ridder had nine rebounds; Johann Grunloh and Ugonna Onyenso each had six.
- Minutes distribution: Thijs de Ridder 28, Johann Grunloh 26, Chance Mallory 25, Jacari White/Sam Lewis/Devin Tillis 24, Dallin Hall 22, Mailk Thomas/Ugonna Onyenso
