Hokies upset #15 UVa., 47-45

Junior guard Erick Green scored 15 points and senior guard Dorenzo Hudson had 12 points to lead Virginia Tech to a 47-45 win over Virginia in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Sunday night (Jan. 22) at John Paul Jones Arena.

The loss was the first of the season at home for UVa and ended a 10-game winning streak for the Cavaliers at JPJA. Virginia is now 15-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.

Virginia is ranked 15th in the latest Associated Press poll and 17th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll.

Senior forward Mike Scott, junior guard Jontel Evans and sophomore guard Joe Harris each scored 10 points for the Cavaliers. Harris had seven rebounds and Scott six.

The win improved Virginia Tech’s record to 12-7 and the Hokies are now 1-4 in the ACC.

Sophomore guard/forward Jarrell Eddie added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Hokies.

Virginia Tech outscored UVa 7-2 over the last 1:51 of the first half to take a 23-19 halftime lead.

The Hokies led by as many as seven points four times in the second half, the last time at 32-25 with 15:20 left in the game.

Virginia then went on an 8-0 run with Evans and Harris each scoring three points to take a 33-32 lead with 10:05 remaining to play.

UVa led 40-37 after a basket by Scott with 4:22 to play, but Virginia Tech outscored the Cavaliers 10-5 the rest of the way. Hudson scored six points in that run by the Hokies.

Virginia Tech took the lead for good at 42-41 on two free throws with 1:52 to play by Green. Hudson then scored to increase the Hokies’ lead to three with 1:10 left. After a basket by Evans for Virginia, Hudson hit a three-point shot with 17 seconds to play to give the Hokies a four-point lead at 47-43.

Harris scored Virginia’s final points on a layup with one second remaining.

Virginia shot a season-low 32.6 percent (15-46) from the field, including just 7.1 percent (1-14) from three-point range, and 63.6 percent (14-22) from the free-throw line. The Cavaliers out-rebounded the Hokies 34-27.

The 45 points scored by the Cavaliers are a season low.

Virginia Tech shot 45.2 percent (19-42) from the field, including 38.5 percent (5-13) from three-point range, and 57.1 percent (4-7) from the free-throw line.
