A three-run New York eighth broke open a 1-0 game and pushed the Mets to a 4-0 win over the Washington Nationals on Friday.
Max Scherzer (1-3) was once again the tough-luck loser, giving up a run on five hits in seven innings, striking out 10 and walking one, but New York ace Matt Harvey (5-0) was just a little better. Harvey threw seven shutout innings, giving up five hits, striking out three and walking one.
A fourth-inning solo homer by Michael Cuddyer, his third of the season, was the only run of the game until the Mets broke through for a three-spot in the eighth off Nationals relievers Matt Thornton and Blake Treinen, the runs scoring on a three-run double to left-center by Daniel Murphy off Treinen.
The loss ended the Nats’ modest three-game winning streak.
