Harvard withstood a late rally by the No. 13 James Madison women’s lacrosse team, and the Crimson came away with a 9-8 double-overtime victory over the visiting Dukes Tuesday afternoon.
JMU lost for only the second time this season, and both defeats were on the road and by a single goal. The Dukes’ record stands at 3-2.
Harvard upped its record to 2-1 after Danielle Tetreault netted the game-winner with 1:21 into the sudden-victory overtime period.
The Crimson held on after leading by three, 8-5, with 16:43 to go before the Dukes tied the game at 8-8 to send the contest into overtime.
Redshirt junior Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) started the JMU comeback as she converted a free-position attempt with 13:55 on the clock.
Harvard controlled the ensuing draw, but on the Crimson’s possession Dukes’ senior Cally Chakrian (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) caused a turnover to give JMU the ball. JMU senior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) scored an unassisted goal to cut the Harvard lead to 8-7 with 6:44 remaining.
The Crimson controlled the next draw, but a shot by Tetreault was saved by redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest) with 3:46 to play. Harvard retained possession with a ground ball following the save, but the Crimson turned the ball over and senior Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) picked up the ground ball.
Following a JMU timeout, Zabel fed a pass to sophomore Amy Roguski (Sykesville, Md./Liberty), who scored the tying goal with 28 seconds remaining in regulation.
In the six-minute overtime, Harvard took three shots to one for JMU. Menghetti made one stop on a Crimson shot, another Harvard shot hit the post and a third was wide. JMU’s shot, by Ancarrow, hit the post.
In the three-minute sudden-victory overtime, Harvard’s Melanie Baskind’s shot was wide but Tetrealt sent a second shot into the net to give the Crimson the win.
Roguski was JMU’s only multiple-goal scorer with two goals. Zabel led the Dukes in points with three on a goal and two assists.
Roguski had a team-high three draw controls, and Ancarrow and Chakrian led JMU with two caused turnovers each. Chakrian led JMU with three ground balls.
Harvard was led in scoring by Tyler Petropulos and Jess Halpern, each with three goals.
JMU’s Menghetti finished with six saves, and Crimson goalie Kelly Weis had 11 stops.
After playing four of its first five games on the road, the Dukes are home for their next two contest. JMU hosts Richmond on March 10 (1 p.m.) and 17th-ranked Loyola on March 17 (1 p.m.).
