Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance launches annual giving campaign

harrisonburgHarrisonburg Downtown Renaissance has launched Back the Burg, a new fundraising campaign to raise “friends” and funds for the on-going revitalization of downtown Harrisonburg.

Friends of Downtown are a loyal group of supporters who donate annually to HDR and recognize the impact the organization has made over the past 13 years. They call downtown the “best thing about Harrisonburg,” but realize there is more work to be done. Joining the Friends of Downtown program is a great way to support the continuing work of HDR while showcasing community pride.

Currently, HDR has approximately 150 friends that give more than $30,000 annually. The goal of the three month campaign is to raise 30 new friends and $15,000 by December 31st.

“HDR is known for the great events that we organize,” says Lauren Huber, Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance’s Director of Resources. “What people may not know is all of the work we do behind the scenes supporting small business owners, creating an environment for local businesses to thrive, and attracting visitors.”

While HDR has made great progress in reviving downtown, much work remains. “There are exciting new developments on the horizon for downtown Harrisonburg and HDR,” says Andy Perrine, President of Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance’s Board of Directors. “The nonprofit is entering a new phase in the efforts to revitalize our city center.” The Back the Burg campaign is an opportunity for HDR to share our plans for the next year and mobilize donors to be a part of the excitement.

The continued growth of Harrisonburg’s dynamic, thriving downtown depends upon the support of individuals and businesses. Since HDR was founded in 2003, we have helped find new economic uses for old buildings, filled the year with festivals and events, initiated beautification projects, encouraged historic preservation, helped existing businesses thrive and new ones to open. None of this would have been possible without the support of the community. And, it’s just the beginning.

Community members wishing to Back the Burg can show their support for downtown by signing up as a friend at www.downtownharrisonburg.org/backtheburg. Current donors that refer a new friend will receive $10 in Downtown Dollars.
