Halloween on the Square comes to Downtown Harrisonburg

harrisonburg downtownHarrisonburg Downtown Renaissance is proud to present the 12th annual Halloween on the Square on Saturday from 10am to 2pm in downtown. Harrisonburg’s favorite spooky celebration welcomes children, families, and pets to Court Square for holiday festivities and expanded entertainment.

The young and young-at-heart will enjoy an array of fun activities from 10am to Noon, including face painting by Larkin Arts, balloon animals, chalk drawing zone, caricatures, games, and more! Costume contests, where participants compete for the chance to win treats and prizes, are one of the most popular aspects of the event. At 11:30 am, children ages newborn to 13 years old will have the chance to show off their frightfully good costumes in the Kids’ Costume Contest.

Halloween on the Square is also a pet-friendly event with activities just for your furry best friends. Well-behaved and leashed dogs are encouraged to come in costume. They will enjoy doggie treats by Blue Ridge Dog and Digico’s Howl-O-Ween costume contest. Additionally, the Rockingham/Harrisonburg SPCA will have a selection of adoptable dogs at their “Muttsters Mash” Pet Station. Attendees will have a chance to meet them before watching them “show off’ in the doggie costume contest.

Afterwards, families can get a head start on trick-or-treating by visiting over 30 downtown businesses from Noon to 2:00 pm. Participating business will be highlighted on a candy map and identified by an orange balloon outside of their business. Candy maps and trick-or-treat bags will be available at the Hardesty-Higgins House Visitors Center at 212 South Main Street and at the information booth on Court Square during the event.

And that’s not all! More Halloween fun will be available with pumpkin painting and free popcorn at the Friendly City Food Co-op, a spooky Halloween music concert at Asbury United Methodist Church, Harrisonburg Park Jam at the Ice House, and a special Halloween-themed “Goons, Goblins, and Grub” kid-themed Rocktown Bites! Downtown Food Tour beginning at 2pm. Tickets for the food tour can be purchased at www.rocktownbites.com.

Halloween on the Square is a free community event made possible by our sponsors: Hess Orthopaedics, MedExpress, DuPont Community Credit Union, Digico Shoot | Post | Design, Brian Mayes Karate, Rockingham/Harrisonburg SPCA, Harrisonburg Fire Department, Explore More Discovery Museum, Arts Council of the Valley, Safe Kids, Larkin Arts, and Bath Fitters.
