First-year UVA women’s golf coach Ria Scott has been named to the coaching staff for the 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup. Scott, a native of the Philippines, is one of two International assistant coaches for the competition scheduled for June 7-9 at The Alotian Club in Roland, Ark.
Florida State’s Robert Duck, a native of England, is the other International assistant coach. Stanford’s Lauren Dobashi and Auburn’s Corey Maggard will serve as United States’ assistant coaches.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and began at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Fla. in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men’s and women’s university/college golfers matching the United States against a team of international players.
“It is an honor to represent college golf’s International team in the Arnold Palmer Cup,” Scott said. “Arnold Palmer’s reach and influence most certainly helped grow the collegiate game at the international level and I am excited to be part of an event that honors him and showcases such high-level golf.
“This is the only competition of its kind that mixes collegiate men and women in a Ryder Cup format. It is one of college golf’s highest honors to be selected as a player and as a coach. I am grateful for the opportunity.”
The Arnold Palmer Cup has been played at some of the world’s greatest courses including The Old Course, The Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Baltusrol, The Honors Course and Cherry Hills. The 2018 matches at Evian Resort Golf Club became the only major tournament which features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
Since its inception, over 100 former Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on either the PGA Tour, European Tour or LPGA, 28 have represented Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup and more than 50 have claimed over 200 victories on the PGA or European Tours. The United States leads the series 12-9-1.
This fall, Scott led the Cavaliers to a first-place finish in her first tournament as UVA’s head coach, taking top honors at Michigan State’s Mary Fossum Invitational. The Cavaliers were runners-up at the Tar Heel Invitational and finished the fall ranked No. 16 by Golfstat.
